Regional Notes
Vieques is an island off the east coast of Puerto Rico, twenty-one miles long and four miles wide. It is administered by the US/Puerto Rico. It is a scenic vacation island with Spanish heritage. Mosquito Bay,on the south coast, has spectacular phosphorescence. However, the island is also the location of live US Navy exercises which are being strongly protested by local people. The alternation between 'hot' and exercise-free periods is scheduled, and can be readily checked by calling 'Vieques Range Control' on VHF 16. Alternatively, call Puerto del Rey's (Puerto Rico) Harbourmaster on VHF 16 or 71, or phone 860-1000. In any case, you will need to call Vieques Range Control for permission to cruise in these waters.
