Marinas and Moorings in Anguilla, Leeward Islands

Regional Notes

ANGUILLA

GOVERNMENT

Anguilla is a self-governing British Dependent Territory.

MONEY

The official currency on Anguilla is the Eastern Caribbean Dollar. Although US dollars are readily accepted, it may be at a lower exchange rate than if they are converted into EC dollars at one of the island's banks. Banking hours are Monday - Thursday 8am to 3pm, and to 5pm on Friday. Barclays Bank is restricted to 8am to 1pm Monday to Thursday, and 3pm to 5pm on Friday.

COMMUNICATIONS

The telecommunications are up to date. Sandy Ground has an internet cafe, and the public library in the Valley has internet access.

HISTORY, LANGUAGE, CULTURE

The language is English. Anguilla's economy was built largely on seafaring skills , and the export of seafood and boatbuilding are still mainstays. Although tourism is growing, the attraction of the island lies in its quiet lifestyle. There has been no development of large settlements, shopping areas, casinos or motorised water sports. On the other hand, Anguilla has some of the most expensive hotels and restaurants in the Caribbean, with a well-heeled and repeat clientele.

The island has no public transport, but there are plenty of taxis and hire cars. There are also bikes for hire. Traffic drives on the left, and a local driving licence is needed (available from the hire firm, a police station, or the Traffic department in the Valley).

Public holidays

Anguilla Day (May 30), Queen's Birthday (2nd Saturday in June), August Monday (1st Monday in August), August Thursday (1st Thursday in August), Constitution Day (August 11), and Separation Day (December 19).

HEALTH

Anguilla has a modern hospital.
