RemarksThe large bay where the port is located is described as an industrial wasteland, and the harbour itself as dirtied with tar and crude oil. It will only be visited for its proximity (by taxi or bus) to Santiago de Cuba, which has the best provisioning in the region. An alternative is to leave your boat at Chivirico and rent a car, but Chivirico is sometimes prohibited to non-Cubans. There is a SUMARPO chandlery near the harbour, with lower prices than the dollar shops. This is at Avenida San Bacilio No. 106, Tel 25514, VHF 12. The dollar shops have a wider range of goods; they are near the Morro castle, and the Cubalse shop near the Hotel Santiago. There are also fresh produce markets in the city, one near the Parque Cespedes, the central square of the city.

Local notesSantiago de Cuba is a major city, second only to Havana. It is a seriously recommended tourist destination, making up for the shortcomings of the marina at Punta Gorda.
