Local notesNueva Gerona is the capital of Juventud Island, located two miles up the Las Casas river. The island has museums of the revolution, including a prison where Castro was held. Previously called the Island of Pines, the Island of Youth was home to foreign students who came here for training at the height of Communism.
RemarksThis is a commercial port, and the officials are relatively inexperienced with foreign tourist vessels. There are dollar shops, a supermarket and a farmers' market nearby. Propane gas can be got, but requires paperwork and travel out of town for refilling.
