| Local notes | Nueva Gerona is the capital of Juventud Island, located two miles up the Las Casas river. The island has museums of the revolution, including a prison where Castro was held. Previously called the Island of Pines, the Island of Youth was home to foreign students who came here for training at the height of Communism. |
