Marinas and Moorings in Cat Island, Bahamas

Regional Notes

Cat Island is 50 miles long, and varies between 1 and 10 miles in width. Cat Island should not be confused with Cat Cay, a small private island in the Bahamas' Bimini group. Cat Island is the tallest island in the Bahamas, with Mount Alvernia at 206 feet. The mountain has a mediaeval hermitage at its peak. Relatively undeveloped, Cat Island is heavily forested, and has around 50 miles of white-and-pink beaches. It is a centre for Obeah practices (African witchcraft and bush medicine), seen in the small objects hanging from trees. A single asphalted road runs the length of the island. The major settlement is Arthur's Town, in the north. The Hollywood star Sidney Poitier was born here, and his book 'This Life' describes Arthur's Town and the island.
